The Winter Where We Stood

“There, in silence, at mid-day,
in that dirty, disordered winter,
those intense horses were the blood
the rhythm, the inciting treasure of life.

I looked. I looked and was reborn:
for there, unknowing, was the fountain,
the dance of gold, heaven
and the fire that lives in beauty.

I have forgotten that dark Berlin winter.

I will not forget the light of the horses.”

Fall Fairy Tale

If I were to re-do my wedding, I’d have it in the fall. I’m so in love with this season. I know spring is the earth renewing itself and summer is all about being free in the great outdoors, but there is something so magical about autumn. It’s the colors. It’s the sound and smell of the fallen leaves. It’s the cool air and the need to wear sweaters but feeling refreshed when the crisp breeze sweeps past.

Danielle and Barry had the most beautiful autumn wedding, filled with pumpkins and leaves and eye-popping colors. What made their scenery even more impressive is that they made all of the decor themselves and decorated the wedding hall on their own. And it was stunning! Their theme was Cinderella, but not traditionally so. Danielle’s royal purple dress set the stage for the fairy tale, highlighting her beauty. The gray tuxes and bridesmaids dresses contrasted against the bride’s dress, reminiscent of the gray autumn skies. I love the pumpkins that were reminders of Cinderella’s carriage, ready to take the bride and groom on their own fairy tale. Needless to say, their wedding–and the bride and groom themselves–were incredibly photogenic and it was an absolute pleasure photographing it!

Baby Prince

My beautiful nephew arrived with a bang. He couldn’t even wait for my sister to be taken into the labor and delivery room. I suppose he had to come into this world in his own fashion and make a statement. He’s surrounded by girls. He has four older sisters and two female cousins (my daughters), so I suppose he has to start making his mark right away.

Before he came, I got to take photos of my gorgeous sister and niece while he was still snug in the womb. I would like to say that capturing my sister and niece is always easy, and in a way I suppose it is. They are incredibly photogenic and it isn’t hard to highlight their dark hair and skin as it contrasts with the light sky. On the other hand, I’m always left wondering if I’ve captured the essence of who they truly are in the photos.

These maternity photos were shot in midsummer and the light, perfect when we arrived for the shoot, faded quickly. My sister’s love for her children, however, cast light in the photos that none of the sun’s rays could ever hope to illuminate.

Autumn in the Alpine Loop

Autumn in the Alpine Loop

Autumn is the most magical season. The crisp air, the tangy scent of fallen leaves, the warm and bright colors that bring more life to the trees and forests than any other season… I can’t get enough of it. It is my favorite time of year and the best time to take photos!

We took our girls on a drive around the Alpine Loop, above Sundance and into American Fork Canyon. Although at first our oldest (who is seven) complained, she started to appreciate the splendor of the colors splashed across the mountains. The two-year-old just wanted treats, but she enjoyed the short hike we took on the rain-soaked paths near Mount Timpanogos.
